Voice123 "Survey Says!" Results!

On July 13th, 2010, we sent out a survey to the entire Voice123 community, Twitter, and Facebook. We were looking for direct answers about action among voice over talent. The questions below were things that voice talent explained they would like to know at a Meetup with Voice123 talent.

If you love voice overs, see what your voice community is doing!!

One last thing:
We also asked 'What mic do you record with?', and received many answers we know will help voice over talent! Check out the forum post displaying results!

All the best to you!

‘E-Go Your Way And I'll Go My Way’

Have you ever found yourself saying, ‘I have many years of experience, but I cannot get voice over work online?’. This topic is rarely discussed in a business that prefers ‘to know evil means speak no evil’. Yet, not too long ago when online casting began to gain a foot-hold, this very question came up quite often. So, why is it that people who have decades of experience can have difficulty in working online? The answer starts with a voice talent's 'mindset' more than the level of a talent’s experience.

Getting Inside The Mind:
In an Internet world where, 'No one believes what they see at first glance', and for good reasons, it is a wise thing to do. For example, I noticed that Alyssa Milano and Serena Williams were my friends on Facebook. As much as I would love to say, 'Woo hoo!', more than likely it is either a 3rd-party intern, hired to do public relations for online marketing. I say this only because I have never spoken to, nor had contact with any of them.

How does this apply to the experienced voice talent? Well, someone boasting 40 years of amazing experience in their communications may actually lead buyers to retreat into a mindset of, 'How will I know this is not spam? I do not know him/her'. The mindset switches to, 'Ok, you show me.', and the second a communication online becomes high maintenance, the buyer thinks, 'I thought so. Only trouble.'

Did You Just Say ‘Experience Means Nothing?’:
No, not at all. Those who do well online understand, ‘Behind the keyboard, we are all equals’, and this is so because the environment allows for it. Without face-to-face reassurance, it is easy to ‘take offense’ at something, if given the time to think about it. Opinions and trends drive online behavior, so never take anything personal. It will set you back.

What to do?
  • Focus on ways to save people time because 'time is money'. People pay more when you save them frustration, and I have seen here how Voice123 does not drive the market down.
  • Avoid sarcasm in emails. Only your friends get the joke.
  • Avoid iron-fist writing styles i.e. 'Give me this or else!'
  • Remain down-to-earth. You don't know them. They don't know you.
  • Leave the buyer out of your personal problems to get the work done.
  • Do NOT let the technology intimidate you out of being what got you work for years! The technology changed. The need for talent has never changed!
Working online is a community better suited for building business relationships of equal understanding. If you find that you never hear back from anyone, understand 'silence' online means they are either not interested, do not want to bother, or do not want to spend the time to deal with you.

It deserves stating again: 'Remain down-to-earth'. If they don’t know you, and you don’t know them, equal respect is in order no matter where you are from or what you have done.

It just helps. For more info, read this article. Care to discuss? Please post about it here!

"Voice123 Community: More Good Toy Story News!"

The ‘Toy Story 3’ Connection!
We were very excited to report back in June, the news about Spanish Buzz being booked on Voice123, and even more excited to share the interview with him that he filmed with us!

After sharing this news, we received an email from voice talent Dan Nachtrab, that he had also booked a voice over job in relation to the same movie, which you can hear on the end of this video (around 2:08)!

When there are times you believe working online is submitting into thin air, remember that the voice over community of voice talent is actually quite connected, news spreads fast, and Voice123 is always happy to promote the success of a voice talent using this website. It really is a small world!

We want to thank Dan for sharing this news with us, and wish you much success with your voice over auditions this upcoming week!

If you ever wish to promote yourself, tell the world about it here on our Voice123 Forums!

Voice123 Community Spotlight: The 'Spanish Buzz' About a Job Booked On Voice123!

The 'Toy Story' Behind the Booking!
Several weeks ago, we had written about Javier Fernandez-Peña and a voice over job he booked after being found on Voice123. He played the role of ‘Spanish Buzz’ in ‘Toy Story 3’! Today, we bring you the interview we mentioned, and hope you will pick up some great info and tips from it! The movie has been doing wonderfully at the box office, and we are very proud of his achievement! A month after its premiere in the United States, it is still in the Top 5 money making films at the box office!

We hope you enjoy the interview!

Did you see that poster he autographed? It could be yours!
To celebrate his success and have some fun for the kids, Voice123 created a special voice over project! We are doing a contest to give away the poster to the child or teen, who has created a character on their own, with their own script.

The contest will be judged by 'Spanish Buzz' himself, and he is very excited to hear all the interesting character demos! You may use your own character demo if you already have one, or create one using a script of your own! Give your character a name, too!

If you wish to submit your character, simply go to this voice over job link and use the following verification code when required: 10007F. This contest ends August 6th, 2010, and results will be announced via this blog!

If you do not have a voice over profile, why not create one?

Good luck and have fun!

Community News: Get Back In Game Shape!

‘Game shape’:
After meeting several Voice123 talent at Mary Lynn Wissner’s voice over workshop last week. Her workshop reminded me that originality is priceless when reading copy, and that has never changed about the voice over industry. After a full week of work, taking a full Saturday to attend a workshop, meeting people, and going over skills needed for the voice over industry, I rested all day Sunday knowing I was ready to take on the week ahead of me with renewed life.

I see workshops get talent back in game shape by giving them confidence in their creative energy. It is important for every artist, who is stuck in one ‘momentum’, to break out of it to absorb new ideas, and get an ‘outside looking in’ perspective. Simply put, how can you 'create' original work, if your mind is too focused on ‘Is this right or not?’.

Upcoming Online Voice123 Training!
Last June, I held an online webinar that went over really well, still do another free Voice123 training every week, and I will be doing another nightly one in August! Please keep your eyes peeled! It is 90-minutes of free info that you will not hear anywhere else!

Attend Voice123 Meetups:
Meet others in the voice industry for free and discuss the best industry in the world! Hear what others do, network, and learn from each other, and use this page to organize the Meetup!

All the best to you!

Voice123 Community Spotlight! ‘Living With A Voice Actor During World Cup: Part 3’

Voice123 has been sharing blogs written by Dianne Russell, partner of Voice123 talent Adam Behr. Adam has enjoyed success with Voice123, and we hope you gather insight from his methods!

"I think the creativity, dynamism, theatrics, and flexibility of voice acting makes it a career choice with vast benefits for both the voice actor and his/her domestic partner. However, I had no idea of the true extent of these benefits, until I realized that we would be living in South Africa during World Cup 2010 and that my voice actor, Adam Behr, would actually be involved in the creation of numerous World Cup related projects. What an intimate way to experience all the festivities and crazy spirit of this historical event!

My favourite World Cup project had to be Adam’s involvement with the Thai food chain “Simply Asia” (listen to the voice over here). We eat there often, so for him to be chosen as the voice of their World Cup “Food Bowl” (a.k.a. “football”) campaign was exciting! Although he works on numerous accents, Thai is not one that he has done before. He stayed up into the wee hours the night before the audition, listening to various Thai voice samples, trying to get it just right. I admit I was a bit pessimistic. To me, he sounded more like a Japanese grandma with a stuffy nose, but he miraculously got the job and it is now playing on local radio! The staff at all the Simply Asia restaurants were sporting flashy red “Food Bowl” uniforms for the duration of the Cup, so eating there now is even more special!

Something on a more serious note and related to World Cup is this video by CRS (Catholic Relief Services) featuring Adam’s voice, a job booked through Voice123. Much has been said about how South Africa has wasted billions on World Cup instead of using the money to fight poverty. Others argue that the unity and national spirit (called ‘ubuntu’) kindled by World Cup has been invaluable and will lead to a more unified approach to dealing with the country’s obvious struggles with poverty. This video will make you appreciate the value of the sport in poorer communities around the world. Personally, I am much more inclined to spend all my pocket money on NGOs and children’s charities than on designer clothes or endless pairs of shoes!

Some of the other World Cup related projects involve advertising for oil products by Castrol Edge (another Voice123 booking) and “Mr. Lube” (listen here), a video soccer game for Anawiki Games in Poland (more Voice123 work), a British-accented narration for the pilot of a top secret international soccer series, and a Coke-South Africa animation as part of the “What’s your celebration?” series for Animalmusic and Santo Advertising.

Our World Cup hangover will hopefully fade away soon, but Adam’s recordings will be there forever. I LOVE living with my voice actor!"

Thank you always!

Voice123 Community: Forum Stuff!

“Say It Loud!”
Voice123 will be posting surveys on their forums on various topics to give you better community insight! We will present the results of this survey in two weeks!

Please go to this forum post!

This week's survey will enter your name into a contest to win a free 'Toy Story 3' poster, autographed by the voice of Spanish Buzz, Javier Fernandez-Pena!

“Wait! Huh? How much?”
Have you ever worked with someone in another country, and were charging something based on your currency? You may help or hurt yourself out of money! Check out this Voice123 forum post, discussing currency converter websites. There are also charts to show you updated currency exchange rates.

“Excuse me? Is This Information Private?’
On the same subject, working with people from other countries means many times dealing with rules and regulations you have never heard of before. At the same time, you have to think about your own ‘rules and regulations’, and even more so, protecting your own sensitive information from becoming public.

Take a look at this forum post here, and remember ‘Gut instinct may not always be right, but it certainly never lies to you!’

“Voice Processor?”
Have you ever been told that your voice sounded “too processed”, but were not sure exactly what that meant. This forum post explains it for you!

The Voice123 Forums are a great collection of information that is very valuable for working online.

We hope you can make the best of it, and thank you to all those who contribute!

Voice123 Tech Tip for Job Posting: 'Details Rule!'

If you have ever posted a job, and found it received a small response, sometimes the best thing to do is take a look at the project description and the script. SmartCast matching determines 'who gets invited by certain boxes checked off', but beyond this, even in private jobs posted, written text is giving insight into the scope of the project. The anonymous environment online creates a need for transparency, and the budget does not always indicate 'value' of a job because working online is about 'creating working relationships for the present and future'. Here are some ideas to consider when you post a project on Voice123 to get the very best auditions possible:

Transparency :
The more you explain, the better. Full explanations give confidence, even when the budget is lower, that you are someone who will be upfront and detailed, giving more confidence that you will be a pleasure to work with. This removes any doubt as to whether or not the project will be a good idea to invest time in. Such project descriptions, "Need sweet voice", are ineffective because they are missing details:

  • What is the product?
  • What is the company?
  • Other requirements and logistics of your project that may tell someone: 'I shouldn't waste this person's time'.

Voice talent gauge from these details, whether or not the job poster has any accountability for the project being posted. From experience in customer service, we have seen, 'More details = more auditions received'.

'Interface Tools Build Relationships!':
So! You found the voice talent! Did you know that voice talent will connect with you more often when you use Voice123's system tools such as the ranking system, and preferred voice tool in your audition inbox? In addition, voice talent know from project details:

  • How much a job poster listens.
  • How many a job poster directly invites for jobs
  • How long he/she has been using Voice123.

Job posters using Voice123 and its system tools, longer, tend to receive more responses than others because there is a trust you will return to post jobs. Who doesn't love repeat business?!

The Voice123 SmartCast software and the Voice123 search feature are great tools for finding voice talent. You can try posting a project here, and use the search feature to directly invite voice talent.

Of course, if you ever have any questions, let our customer service team know! By the way...we work weekends! :)

Thank you always!

Tips From Voice123: "Questions From Trainings"

Every Thursday, Voice123 does a free training on how to use the Voice123 SmartCast system, but also offers tips on how to work online as a voice over artist. Today, we present questions asked by you, the Voice123 Community, that we hope will assist everyone who has not attended this special training!

"This person loves my voice, and wants to hire me, but how do I say no?"

Simply put, there will be times when people reach out to you that you did not expect. Voice123 does not screen private messages. If you know you cannot do a job, responding and saying you are not available is the best way to go. Why? You save someone more time by not keeping them waiting for an answer, or a false promise, and they will remember you for doing this in a positive light.

"I don't know this person. What do I do to find out if they are a legitimate business?"

There are two different ways of looking at this:

First, working online has given more businesses access to finding voice over talent, so you may indeed here from someone casting for major motion picture, as well as, that friendly person down the street needing a voice over for his/her new phone message. You, as a 'do it yourself' voice talent business, have to decide what is legitimate for yourself. Repeat customers and people who pay you often can assist in making that decision.

Second, with the explosion of social media, if you cannot find any information about a person, or his/her business using Google, it tells you something about how new they may be to the Internet, and you are working online. Try this: Type your name, followed by Voice123, into your web browser, and examine the results. If you are not sure about who contacted you, do the research through your web browser. You will be able to judge from what you see through web content, who you may or may not be working with.

"This person seemed kind of strange. Will I get in trouble for turning down work?"

No, not at all. Voice123 serves as a connection service, and not an agency. We make no commission. We do recommend when you see something that appears strange to take a moment, and remember that this is a global marketplace. Not everyone will be used to your style of communicating, and given that communication face to face is 90% body language, but you do not have that online, you have to first give someone the benefit of the doubt. "People are strange, when you're a stranger". When you do book work on Voice123.com, be sure to let us know and maybe we can upload your work onto our youtube page!

We hope to bring you more community questions in the future, and hope you find this helpful!

Thank You Always!

Memories from Voice123: “Three Years Down: Then and Now”

I am pleased to write this a few days after the 3-year anniversary of Voice123’s SmartCast. I joined Voice123.com as a Quality Assurance Associate on July 2nd, 2007, five days before its release. I also write this today because July 9th,2007 was the official last day I had ever submitted an audition on Voice123 as a voice talent. It was my last...because it was the first time that I had a chance to witness the full scope of what takes place online, from start to finish. I want to share with you a list of some of the lessons I have learned after starting here:
  1. All voice over casting websites are not the same. They have different clients and technology, and a separate business plan must be applied for each one, depending on the interface of the buyer.
  2. Online auditions are not as subjective as offline auditions. You just do not have the face to face or verbal reassurance to remind you something is not working.
  3. Never take opinions and advice personally. The Internet is driven by opinions and trends. You need them. Learn from what is not working.
  4. News travels faster than ever before. So, things like honesty, integrity, and transparency are of the ultimate importance in a ‘net democracy’. In fact, without any physical or verbal reassurance, the demand is heightened.
  5. There are more voice over professionals online than ever before to compete with. You have to see that as a good thing. Advice from them cost thousands of dollars just 10-15 years ago.

Oh...and that audition I submitted? It was a job posted by a Voice123 voice talent, Perry Norton. After expressing interest in me, I wrote her to express that I worked here, and could not accept any work through the site. I felt bad for wasting her time. I was also shown quickly that maybe pre-2007, I should have tested the voice seeker interface to get a buyer’s perspective because knowing how to communicate online with the tools people are using is very important.

We are all part of a community of generous people who care about each others' success. The information to succeed is there. It may take time, but it will happen if positive, flexible effort is applied!

Thank You Always!

Tips from Voice123: "Target Your Demos Effectively! Avoid Coffee Coaster Demos!"

Compilation Demos: Ineffective Online
If you have ever uploaded only one compilation demo onto Voice123, and gave it one category, but then wondered why direct invites came so few and far between, before believing the search engine results are the cause...take a moment to remember:

Online marketing demands 'being found in the right searches'. The best way to 'be found' is to be everywhere at the same time advertising what you do best, with the utmost professional integrity. Why? The speed by which the Internet is used affects the way people view search results. The general rule of thumb to follow:

  • 'Explain what you do with as few clicks as possible, and in less time.'

The average web user decides within 3 to 20 seconds of a mouse-click, whether or not they will give up on a website. That is a short window of time to make an impression! If you have a compilation demo with many recordings for many categories, those spots towards the end of it may never be heard online. Even worse, if you have a demo category such as IVR, but it comes later in your demo while your first spot is a radio promo; the person clicking the mouse believes in 3 to 20 seconds, that the demo is not what it says, and simply passes i.e. 'Next!'.

Does This Mean 'Throw Away Your Compilation Demos!'
No no no! Not at all! In fact, you are in luck! Working online, especially with the Voice123 search feature and SmartCast, the best way to handle this:
  • Edit your compilation demo into separate spots
  • Upload each one with a name and recording category that, within 3 to 20 seconds, will prove it is what you labeled!
  • By doing this, you avoid the searcher's mindset: 'Why do you call it this, but I heard that?'; a question you will never have the opportunity to answer.
  • The more spots you have uploaded, the better your search results both on Google and Voice123's search feature!
Booked Something New?
Get clearance from the people you have worked for and upload it right away; plain and simple. Important to keep in mind is that when you go to sleep every night, your demo, how you label it, and what you write online, stays there as your personal spokesperson working 24/7. This also means your spokesperson had better be telling the truth. Working online has come full circle, in a way, because when you worked offline you never lied on a resume sent to an agent 'because they may know someone and can find out'. As such, you should never misrepresent yourself online, as being the owner of work that is not yours.

Coffee Coasters?
I once had a compelling experience in 1996 when I saw an agent using a voice over demo CD as a coffee coaster. When I look back at all the demos I mailed out, and the amount of money spent, I can count on my hand the amount of times it actually got me a call. One time, my headshot showed up on the cover of a Ross Reports magazine, and I have no idea how. This means I was not targeting my marketing properly. Working online, you have greater reach at literally no cost at all. With such a powerful ability, it must be used wisely.

Do you have compelling voice over experiences you would love to share with the community? Let us know by writing us here!

Thank You Always!

Voice123 Tech Tip: Shared Inbox by 'You'

Do you know that you do not have to tell anyone where your auditions came from when you are using Voice123 and working with a client?

It is true! At Voice123, our main focus is making sure that jobs are posted, and you have excellent transactions with voice talent. We know that you are out there working with clients everyday and sometimes that client needs to know the auditions came from you and your hard work! In simple terms, whenever using the shared inbox link, there is a choice to hide all the references to Voice123. You can see an example of such an inbox provided from my voice seeker account when I posted a job looking for great voice talent!

Take a look and listen for yourself! We hope you enjoy it! Hold onto it for the future, and use this feature yourself with your next client for the next voice over project you post!

By the way, if you would ever like to post or read up on our Voice123 forums, voice seekers can post for free, and your feedback is always greatly appreciated!

Thank You Always!

Truly, the best part about it was having the opportunity to speak face to face with voice talent. We got an inside look into the daily events these voice talent experience, and had wonderful discussions about ways to improve Voice123, and their auditioning methods.

Please take a look at the Voice123 Facebook Page for photos and other Voice123 blogs! Thank you to the following Voice123 talent. It was great to Meetup with you!

We also wish to thank all of the organizers who held their meetups this past week! If you have any photos or videos to share, please let us know!
