If I Was An Agent...Why I Would Use Voice123

I had this conversation with some Voice123 staff over dinner last Friday: “If I was an agent, I would be using Voice123 everyday.” Here is why:

  • Time-saver: Voice over agents have used Voice123 in the past to find talent. These jobs receive the quickest response out of any other job posted. In addition, Voice123 is a global marketplace, meaning I could very well post a job at 11pm EST, and get plenty of auditions before I go to bed, either from the pacific coast, or other parts of the world!

  • Shared inbox link to give to people for consideration, which also allows for me to hide that I used Voice123. You will not find any reference to Voice123 here. This feature was created for the job poster to take the credit for finding talent.

  • The website co-founders and staff are comprised of voice talent, artists and skilled web developers. I can trust the website will be sensitive to the business needs of the voice talent, and the job poster who needs an organized, time-saving technology for voice casting.

  • Finally....It is free to find voice talent. Voice123 only cares that voice talent get work, and does not take commission. So...no intermediaries. I guess that is a time-saver, too.

When I used Voice123 as a voice talent, I was contacted by agents a couple of times through the search feature. For this reason, I especially like the Voice123 voice seeker interface because it promotes loyalty and relationship building.

After a while, you start to realize you found more voice talent than you ever could have without the use of technology.

What do you think?

Is Seeking Voice Talent Like Ordering Pizza?

The idea for this blog came from an experience with trying to use The Dominos Pizza online ordering website, while working late one night last week.

The Common Thread
Pizza and voice overs...both can be ordered on a website, but they are two entirely different businesses. But the fact that they can be ordered, or sought, on a website creates a common perception as to ‘how things should work because it is a website, after all!’.

The Bad Experience With Dominos
Now living in New York City, it may seem I betrayed brethren by ordering pizza from a chain restaurant; online no less, but I was in a bind. I was working alone and could not leave my desk. I placed an order asking for Buffalo chicken wings, cheesy bread, and diet coke; yes, from a pizza place. The website showed me this really cool graphic, that I could track my order, and I thought, ‘Great, back to work. I got this graphic telling me what's up!’.

Then, the food arrived...kind of...

The Buffalo wings were the wrong type, the sauce was wrong, they sent me Sprite and Coke, and the delivery man had no pen to sign the credit card receipt....because it is a website, so I paid online. I was forced to ask, 'Did you bring me the wrong order? Maybe this was meant for someone else?'.

It got worse...
I tried to call the store, the delivery guy, and the supervisor; numbers given to me by the website. No one answered the phone.

Back to voice overs...
Imagine, you are a voice seeker and you 'go to a website', ask for a female speaking voice talent who has ISDN, and you need the voice over work within a day. For that reason, you agree to pay a little more than usual. Now, because the money looks good, some voice talent who are the complete opposite of what you requested (perhaps men), decide to submit auditions, state that they are experienced (and they are...offline), and therefore they should be considered.

Did someone just show up at the door with a bottle of coke? These two anecdotes are taken straight from my work experience here.

Human Nature
When it comes to doing anything with a website, the fact a person takes the time to request something, means they want what they asked for, or as close to it as possible. You can be a chef straight out of Sicily, or a union talent with decades of experience, any client ready to spend money simply wants what they requested; the chef's/voice talent interpretation of the request...not the polar opposite. Creative license expires when you offer the 'absolute wrong', in a business with no 'absolute right'. Artistic interpretation aside, do not be the voice talent who makes great pizza, but has no business plan in place to deliver it in the manner expected of a website.

Websites
Be it a pizza or a voice talent, websites in any service industry have to provide solutions, and therefore the same psychology applies across the board for a ‘paid more when pleased more’ business:

  • ‘Please...I know what I want. Show me you know what I need.’

Epilogue: Ending on a positive note!
Over the weekend, the corporate offices of Dominos called me to apologize, and refunded my money. Even still, we all know how impressions can lead us away from something; opportunity has been lost.

I took what happened Friday, as a sign someone was telling me to eat healthier.

Online Voice Casting: Workflow Perspectives

I work as Community Development Manager for Voice123. For a very brief period of time in 2003, I worked as an assistant to an agent. Watching the processes behind the scenes at Voice123, it is simply amazing to me how the work flow of a day has changed over the last seven years due to websites, such as Voice123.

I reflect on this today to show you why this website is the best choice for finding voice talent, and how my agenda would look today, in comparison to 2003.

October 5th, 2003:

9am - 12pmEST
  • Gather information about upcoming jobs
  • Field phone calls of those looking for talent
  • Go through the talent that may be best suited for it
  • Concern myself with who will actually book the job

12pm - 3pmEST
  • Begin “Can you be here tomorrow?” and ‘Explanation of audition’ calls
  • Explain why we thought of them for something

3pm - 5pmEST
  • “How was he/she?” & “How to proceed because you know you want whom I sent” follow-up calls from day before.
  • I eat somewhere during this time.

5pm- 8pmEST
  • Investigating new talent, meeting new talent, and research

Fast forward....

October 5th, 2010:

9am - 10amEST
  • Post job on Voice123 for anyone looking for voice talent

10:30 - 11:00 EST
  • Listen to auditions
  • Make notes
  • Share inbox link with client

11:30 EST - 12:30 EST
  • Contact voice talent the client showed interest in

12:30pm - 1:30pm EST
  • Eat lunch

1:30pm - unknown
  • Work on decision process
  • What you do after this may take some time to figure out, but it is nice to know you have the rest of the day to do it!

How times have changed...
Voice123 allows for anyone, from top agents down to local small businesses, to connect directly with voice talent, who know how to work as their own business. Voice123 is an online casting director of sorts that simply connects you to voice talent using our SmartCast software, or Search Feature.

In the days of, 'Time is money!', saving money on office space, supplies, and dealing with intermediaries that expect payment for their time (which costs money and delays the decision process), doing it all yourself with another voice talent is the smart choice!

Please post a project today!

Usage Tip For Voice Job Posting: Enough Already

At Voice123, we do our best to make sure that all business transactions occur without the possible issue of someone saying, "Oh, I must have missed that email.” As a person posting a job you may get several follow-up emails, making sure you have reached the talent.

Unfortunately, given the importance of each voice project to everyone involved in the community, and the quirky nature of Internet spam filters, we take such measures as a safety net to keep everyone communicating. We do hope you understand that it has helped more times than it has led to one saying, ‘Enough already!’. SO...

"Yes. I had enough."
If you have had enough of our email system looking out for you, you can:
  • Click the link in that reminder email, which asks if the message was answered
  • Write us and let us know you would like to "Opt-out of mailing lists"

For some more fun! Brand of the Week!
For those who love to study branding, we bring you a new brand created by a Voice123 community member this week, Paul J. Rose; also found here!

Voice Seeker Survey: You Prefer Quality!

Keeping it real...short:
Not to long ago, a survey was sent out to all those currently posting jobs on Voice123 to find voice over talent. We asked a simple question: 'Do you prefer 'quality' or 'quantity?'.

  • Prefer receiving what was requested in the project, good, and nothing else: 84.6%
We also asked, "How many years have you worked in media production and/or the voice over industry?":
  • Less than 10 years: 38.5%
  • More than 10 years: 7.7%
  • More than 20 years: 30.8%
  • More than 30 years: 23.1%
We greatly appreciate all those who answered the survey, and will use your responses to make for a better Voice123!

Tech Tip: About SmartCast Usage

Finding Voice Talent:
When you post a job on Voice123, and decide to use SmartCast technology, you should know that if there are less than ten premium subscribers who match what you are looking for, it may lead to a small response. If such things happen, usually in the case of needing a rare language, you can try:

When you come across profiles labeled ‘Standard Subscriber’, it means the voice talent has created a free profile, but is currently not paying to use the service. You will not find Standard Subscribers while using the Voice123 Search Feature, but can look people up directly on the Voice123 talent directory. Voice123 staff is experienced and looking to help you!

Please post a project and see what makes this website so special!

Last thing...We promise!
Don’t forget about this quick survey with just two questions! We hope you will quickly let us know what you think!

Best to you always!

Voice123 Tech Tip for Job Posting: 'Details Rule!'

If you have ever posted a job, and found it received a small response, sometimes the best thing to do is take a look at the project description and the script. SmartCast matching determines 'who gets invited by certain boxes checked off', but beyond this, even in private jobs posted, written text is giving insight into the scope of the project. The anonymous environment online creates a need for transparency, and the budget does not always indicate 'value' of a job because working online is about 'creating working relationships for the present and future'. Here are some ideas to consider when you post a project on Voice123 to get the very best auditions possible:

Transparency :
The more you explain, the better. Full explanations give confidence, even when the budget is lower, that you are someone who will be upfront and detailed, giving more confidence that you will be a pleasure to work with. This removes any doubt as to whether or not the project will be a good idea to invest time in. Such project descriptions, "Need sweet voice", are ineffective because they are missing details:

  • What is the product?
  • What is the company?
  • Other requirements and logistics of your project that may tell someone: 'I shouldn't waste this person's time'.

Voice talent gauge from these details, whether or not the job poster has any accountability for the project being posted. From experience in customer service, we have seen, 'More details = more auditions received'.

'Interface Tools Build Relationships!':
So! You found the voice talent! Did you know that voice talent will connect with you more often when you use Voice123's system tools such as the ranking system, and preferred voice tool in your audition inbox? In addition, voice talent know from project details:

  • How much a job poster listens.
  • How many a job poster directly invites for jobs
  • How long he/she has been using Voice123.

Job posters using Voice123 and its system tools, longer, tend to receive more responses than others because there is a trust you will return to post jobs. Who doesn't love repeat business?!

The Voice123 SmartCast software and the Voice123 search feature are great tools for finding voice talent. You can try posting a project here, and use the search feature to directly invite voice talent.

Of course, if you ever have any questions, let our customer service team know! By the way...we work weekends! :)

Thank you always!

Thoughts on Most Recent Voice123 Voice Over Project

This past week, due to an upcoming change in our phone system, I had the opportunity to post a voice over job on Voice123, which you can see here. The project closed on Wednesday, and I thought it would be helpful to share feedback about what went through the mind of this voice seeker (me) and my perspective. I believe this will assist all those who use Voice123. Knowing 'what takes place' is extremely important with any business to show you are aware of the needs of a market.

The first thing I need to do is to thank all of those who submitted. The submissions were all great! Maybe I felt there was 1 out of the 30 that I wanted to reach out to, and recommend that I heard an accent, or slight audio hiss, but this left me wondering:

Is it my place to offer advice because I posted the project?

Why? A democratic creative process is always difficult because everyone will like someone different, if they feel they like a voice for a specific reason. This reason cannot always be explained because a creative process involves 'emotion'. Explaining emotions such as, 'Sorry, you sounded too much like my mom', really do not help, nor do non-creative types always know how to explain what they feel. In this project, the internal debate seemed to always start off with, 'I REALLY think this is the right person because...' and it went on and on, each person trying to push for their choice. We all heard that each of these voice talent are professional enough to be the voice of this company's customer service line, which made a decision tougher.

I understand how many would love feedback, and I thought I could give it back to talent. How exactly can I explain to someone we want to use, that we could not, and then explain all the random thoughts that went on in the debating? With so many colorful thoughts, all you end up with is a gray area. I did directly invite two people; one did not answer. That really is ok. It made things easier. I do think for the purposes of networking online, I would have replied with a, 'No thanks! I am busy working on another project currently', if not interested. However, it is always wasted energy to take anything personal when working online. Being exposed to thousands of opinions each day in a global environment of varying cultures will wear you out, if you allow it.

So... how was a decision reached?

With almost every voice audition being perfect, 'hiring' becomes 'solving a puzzle'. I have been in situations offline, where I asked a manager for feedback on an audition I did not book. The casting director said I was perfect at the audition, but it turned out... 'my voice was perfect, but someone else was a better fit'. Go figure. Getting feedback in voice coaching and classes, always worked better because I had that safety net that allowed me to fail miserably, with only a supportive class that would see it.

We sincerely appreciate the professionalism of the auditions received this week, and that sign of respect, to take our job posting seriously, has us very proud of the professionalism of all Voice123 voice over talent.

Ranking System Change on Voice123

Voice123 created the Ranking System as a form of 'keeping you connected to the very voice talent you enjoyed listening to while using Voice123.'

Each time you use Voice123 SmartCast to post a project, and the auditions come to you within an hour, you will find a series of stars next to the audition.

The 5th star used to read 'Likely Hiring'. On December 15th, 2009, it was changed to 'Finalist'.

Why? The reason for this is that Voice123 learned through user feedback from voice talent and voice seekers, that 'Likely Hiring' was not satisfying the task of connecting people, whether they would be hired or not, and at times led to confusion between the voice seeker and talent.

We made this change to assist you in connecting with voice talent you enjoyed hearing, through steady usage of the ranking system.

You will now see these choices, when you run your mouse over the five stars listed:
  • Finalist (highest)
  • Considering
  • Maybe
  • Not Likely
  • Never Again (lowest)
You will also see an option to make someone a 'Preferred Talent', under his/her name. Such algorithms found in the audition inbox are great for the entire voice over community because they help build you a network, and still stands as a reason why Voice123 shines brightest when it comes to building professional online voice over relationships. With so many repeat clients offering work to voice talent, SmartCast, and our voice over search feature, we see at least 2500 voice over job solicitations pass through Voice123 during our high traffic months, and slightly less during holiday seasons.

If you have projects open right now, try this out for yourself, or post a project to see how Voice123 works for you in finding the most professional voice talent, today!

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to ask us!

Not Hearing What You Expected? We Will Help!

The Voice123 SmartCast system is an automated system set up to match your project request to the profiles of Voice123 voice talent. Voice123 also offers a search feature where you may directly invite voice talent on your own.

If you ever feel your project is not getting the response you had expected, please contact us and we will gladly take a look into your project to assist you!

Feedback in the past has shown that voice talent seem more likely to respond to auditions that have the following characteristics:

1. A transparent and detailed description with proper grammar and spelling.

2. A description of how the script is to be read, and help with words that need special pronunciations.

3. A person posting a job that listens to all auditions usually gets heavier response.

4. A job posting with a budget that states a descriptive amount as to how each voice talent is paid.

5. Of course, being friendly with the way one writes is a big step towards building harmonious community business transactions.

You can read our Guide to Hiring Voice-Over Talents for more information and tips!

If you would like to post a project please do so! We will be here to help you through the process!

Happy Thanksgiving!
